The ABI placed an article from Tim Breedon in the Sunday Telegraph. The article looked ahead to 2011 as a seminal year for the insurance industry ahead of major reforms in 2012 to pensions, regulation and retail distribution.

Tuesday 14 December  

Right Issue Fees Group         
Set up by the Institutional Investor Council, under the ISC, the Group released its findings this week. It found a significant portion of the fees companies pay for underwriting rights issues is not a good use of shareholders’ money.   The report also revealed widespread concern amongst institutional investors about the high level of underwriting fees banks charge, and the lack of transparency around how much is actually paid, to whom it is paid and what is paid for.

Wednesday 15 December  

Ski Insurance  
ABI issued reminder on the importance of having winter sports insurance when going on a ski break. It followed on from a survey by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office that suggested that 30% of those who go skiing don’t take out winter sports insurance

Snow tyres  
There was continued media interest in the possible insurance implications of fitting snow tyres. We continued to confirm that the general view was that the fitting of snow/winter tyres would not be classed as a material alteration to the vehicle (provided they are fitted by reputable garage, in accordance with manufacturers own specifications)  and that, to be sure, policyholders should check with the head office of their insurance company.
