There is a dedicated ABI helpline if you have any further enquiries about the Tracing Code: please call Briony Krikorian on 020 7216 7492.
The Tracing Code helps claimants and defendants to find otherwise untraceable EL insurance policies, by circulating enquiries to insurers. It is a free of charge, fully automated online system, which processes your EL insurance enquiry and emails you the results. (The ABI no longer accepts forms by post, email or fax.)
Before using the Tracing Code, read the Employers' Liability Insurance Tracing Code: A Guide for Claimants which may be read or downloaded from the column on the right of this page.
As a claimant, you should only use the Tracing Code:
If the claimant suffers personal injury or disease caused during employment.
If the claimant’s former employer(s) has ceased trading and you are unable to find the EL insurance records relating to the relevant period of employment.
As a defendant, you should only use the Tracing Code:
If you are facing an EL claim.
(a) If you are unable to find records of your EL insurance policy for the period of the claim (pre-1999 only) OR
(b) In mesothelioma and lung cancer cases only, if a co-defendant (another employer in whose employ the employee was exposed to the cause of the disease or injury) has ceased trading, and the EL insurance policy for the relevant period of employment is untraceable.
You should not use the Tracing Code:
If you know the employer did not have EL insurance during the relevant period of employment.
For public or any other liability claims.
To catalogue your insurance history.
For any research purposes. The Tracing Code exists to help individuals receive vital compensation; bogus enquiries will only slow down the system.
How to complete the Online Enquiry Form
1. Mandatory fields marked with an * must be completed.
2. Ensure your email address is correct and contactable for at least two months.
3. Only submit one enquiry per employer.
4. Provide as much additional information as possible to help insurers trace the employer.
5. Check thoroughly for any mistakes, including spelling and typing errors.
Tracing Process
On clicking the ‘Submit Enquiry’ button you will receive an acknowledgement message on your screen, with a reference number for your enquiry. You will also receive an immediate confirmation email from the system.
You will then receive a second email with the results of your enquiry. You will receive it within 5 weeks for mesothelioma enquiries, and within 8 weeks for all other enquiries. The second email will tell you whether an insurer has found reference to the claimant’s former employer in their records. As the Tracing Code is fully automated, the ABI cannot fast track any enquiries through the system.
