What if something goes wrong?

Your policy documents will tell you what to do if you need to make a claim.

Most claims are dealt with quickly and to everyone’s satisfaction.

But if you are unhappy with the way your claim has been handled, you should contact your insurer to complain. All insurers have a complaints procedure and will be happy to help you and explain the next steps.

If you still think you are being treated unfairly, you have the right to right to refer your case to the independent Financial Ombudsman Service.

The service is free to consumers and insurers must obey their decisions. But taking this step does not prevent consumers taking legal action as well.

Insurers also need to ensure they comply with the rules on handling claims of the Financial Services Authority which has responsibility for the industry. More information can be found on the Financial Services Authority (FSA) website.
