STEER CLEAR OF TROUBLE DURING THE FREEZE
Motorists caught out by treacherous road conditions during the current freeze are
being
advised by the Association of British Insurers on how to get moving as quickly as
possible
when making a claim following an accident.
If involved in an accident, motorists should:
- Tell their insurers as soon as possible (even if the damage is minor and you
don't
intend to make a claim). They will provide an accident report form for
completion
and, depending on the extent of the damage, will arrange an inspection or
repairs.
- The insurance company will advise on how to get the vehicle repaired. Many have
either nominated garages or can provide details of local recommended garages
who can carry out any repairs. This may avoid the need to get separate
estimates.
If another vehicle(s) is involved, motorists will also need to:
- Ask the other drivers(s) involved for their name and address, make a note of
their
car registration number together with make and model.
- Obtain the name of their insurers and also, if possible, the policy number or
certificate number.
- If anyone is injured, produce a certificate of insurance. If this cannot be
done at
the scene, it must be produced at a police station within 24 hours.
- Get hold of the names and addresses of any independent witnesses at the scene
of the accident. While details are fresh, make a sketch plan of the
accident.
- Tell their insurers about any statement made at the scene by any of the parties.
Do not discuss whose fault it was but pass on all details of the accident to
your
insurers immediately.
Tony Baker, ABI's Deputy Director General, said:
"With driving conditions in many parts of the country particularly hazardous
at the
moment, it is important that motorists take extra care venturing out on
dangerous
roads. Should the worst happen and an accident occurs, insurance will ensure
that
you get back on the road as quickly as possible so it is equally important
that you
know how to go about making a claim."
