PRIVATE MEDICAL INSURANCE - EMPOWERING THE CONSUMER
IN REVIEWING CASES
To help consumers towards a better understanding of private medical insurance (PMI)
before they buy it, the Association of British Insurers has published an information sheet,
"Guide to Private Medical Insurance".
This explains what PMI is, takes the reader through the types of treatment covered, and
points out the common exclusions and the factors which can affect the premiums to be
paid. It indicates the different approaches to dealing with an applicant's previous medical
history and pre-existing health conditions, and includes sections on how medical expenses
cover can be bought and what to do to make a claim.
Mark Boléat, Director General of the Association, said:
"When buying private medical insurance, people need to know what they will get
for their money, and what they will not get. Private medical insurers recognise the
value of good consumer information and informed customers.
"It is hoped this new information sheet will help people considering PMI to
understand what questions they need answered and the key features of the cover
they are being offered, so they can make an informed decision."
Consumers are showing increasing interest in a range of health-related insurances, and
this Guide is the first in a new series of information guides to be published during 1998 to
help them understand critical illness, permanent health (income replacement) and long-
term care insurances, as well as private medical cover.
