STORM WARNINGS
With further storms, and possible flooding, forecast for many areas over the New Yearperiod, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) is advising householders to:
- Check roofs, chimneys and gutters for loose or dislodged tiles, cracks and blockages.
- Clear drain gratings.
- Make sure fences and gates are in good repair - a little damage can be made much worse by a storm.
Householders who were affected by the storms over the Christmas period should informtheir insurers as soon as possible, and make temporary repairs to prevent further damageoccurring. ABI's advice to policyholders is:
- Household building and contents policies cover damage by storms and flooding.
- Reasonable costs of temporary repairs will be met by insurers, but make sure to keep receipts.
- The cost of alternative accommodation will usually be met, up to stated limits, if their home becomes uninhabitable.
- Damage to cars is covered by comprehensive motor insurance policies.
- They should check the full extent of their policies and report any losses to their insurance company, intermediary or broker as soon as possible. If their policy includes details of an emergency helpline, this can help in arranging prompt repairs.
