ABI welcomes publication of information on flood risks by rhe environment agency
The Association of British Insurers (ABI) welcomes the publication today (Thursday 7 December 2000) of information on the Environment Agency’s website of areas of England and Wales at potential risk of flooding from rivers and the sea.
Mary Francis, ABI’s Director General said:
“Insurers are already aware of areas vulnerable to flooding, so this information is not new to the industry. The recent floods have raised awareness of the need to guard against future flooding. For property owners, having easy access to information on flood risks should help to reduce the impact of flooding.
“To enable insurers to continue providing widespread, affordable flood cover for policyholders, including those in flood vulnerable areas, there need to be good flood defence strategies and adequate investment in flood defences. Sensible planning guidance on building on floodplains also needs to be implemented. Greater public awareness of the importance in reducing the flood risk will enable people to take an informed view about flood protection needs in their community.”
