Laura Hughes

Assistant Director, Head of General Insurance Policy

Laura Hughes is responsible for leading the insurance industry’s policy positions on a range of issues, focused largely across property insurance, motor insurance and professional indemnity insurance.

She has led some major projects for the industry in recent years, including managing the implementation of Flood Re since it’s launch in 2016, as well as leading the industry’s coordinated response to major incidents including severe floods and storms and the impacts of covid-19.  Laura has led the industry’s engagement since the tragic events at Grenfell Tower, influencing Government’s understanding of combustible materials on buildings, fire safety issues and helping shape the much needed legislative and regulatory changes.  Alongside this, Laura has also represented the industry on road safety, the impact of Brexit and development of the framework around Autonomous Vehicles, as well as various industry-led initiatives to improve reputation.

Laura joined the ABI in January 2015 after seven years at the Environment Agency.
