We are more than happy for you to ask us questions about our policies during the recruitment process but have shared the key details below to equip you with the key information you need.

Maternity Leave

Maternity Leave can last for up to 52 weeks. If you are entitled to receive Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP), you are eligible to receive enhanced maternity pay from the ABI for the first 18 weeks of maternity leave on the following basis:

Above statutory and less than 2 years’ service by the “Qualifying Week”

Over 2 years’ service by the “Qualifying Week”

  • 100% of pay for the first 6 weeks
  • 50% of pay for the next 6 weeks
  • 25% of pay for the following 6 weeks
  • SMP for the remaining 21 weeks
  • (in each case inclusive of SMP)
  • 100% of pay for the first 12 weeks
  • 50% of pay for the next 6 weeks
  • SMP for the remaining 21 weeks
  • (in each case inclusive of SMP)


You can use up to 10 paid keeping in touch (‘KIT') days (to be agreed between you and your manager) during your maternity leave without losing your SMP entitlement.

Paternity Leave

Providing you are eligible for Paternity Leave and qualify for Statutory Paternity Pay (SPP). However, the ABI go beyond the statutory requirements and offer 2 weeks' Paternity Leave at full pay.

Adoption Leave

In an adoption case, surrogacy case, or a fostering for adoption case, Adoption Leave can last for a maximum of 52 weeks, providing you meet the eligibility conditions.

If you are one-half of a couple (married, in a civil partnership, or unmarried), and you are adopting a child jointly, only one of you is eligible to take Adoption Leave. If your partner has elected to take Adoption Leave, you will not be able to do so. However, you may be eligible for Paternity Leave and Pay. You and your spouse/partner may also be eligible to opt into Shared Parental Leave (SPL) which gives you more flexibility to share the leave and pay available in the first year. Please see ‘Shared Parental Leave’ for details of this.

If you are entitled to receive Statutory Adoption Pay (SAP), you are eligible to receive Enhanced Adoption Pay from the ABI for the first 18 weeks of Adoption Leave on the following basis:

At least 26 weeks' service and less than 2 years' service by the "Qualifying Week"

Over 2 years' service by the "Qualifying Week"

  • 100% of pay for the first 6 weeks
  • 50% of pay for the next 6 weeks
  • 25% of pay for the following 6 weeks
  • SAP for the remaining 21 weeks

(in each case inclusive of SAP)

 

  • 100% of pay for the first 12 weeks
  • 50% of pay for the next 6 weeks
  • SAP for the remaining 21 weeks

(in each case inclusive of SAP)

 

Shared Parental Leave

If you are eligible for shared parental leave and entitled to receive shared parental pay (SPP), the ABI pay enhanced shared parental pay to all colleagues on SPL for the first 18 weeks of SPL. This is on the following basis:

Above statutory and less than 2 years’ service by the “Qualifying Week”

Over 2 years’ service by the “Qualifying Week”

  • 100% of pay for the first 6 weeks
  • 50% of pay for the next 6 weeks
  • 25% of pay for the following 6 weeks
  • SPP for the remaining 21 weeks

(in each case inclusive of SPP)

  • 100% of pay for the first 12 weeks
  • 50% of pay for the next 6 weeks
  • SPP for the remaining 21 weeks

(in each case inclusive of SPP)

 

It should be noted that the amount of SPP available is reduced by the amount of statutory pay that either parent/adopter/carer have already been paid.

You can use up to 20 paid keeping in touch (‘KIT') days (to be agreed between you and your manager) during your SPL leave without losing your SPP entitlement.

Parental Leave

Parental leave is available to ABI colleagues with one year's continuous service who have, or expect to have, parental responsibility for a child. 

You can take up to a total of 18 weeks unpaid Parental Leave for each child any time up until the date of the child's 18th birthday. You can take a maximum of 4 weeks Parental Leave per year in respect of any individual child.

Flexible Working:

All eligible ABI colleagues may apply to work more flexibly on a permanent and contractually binding basis but we recognise that it’s important to maintain a good work-life balance and there will be times when we need to have some flexibility in our working day.

Normal working hours at the ABI fall between 8am and 5:30pm and there is a degree of flexibility regarding exact start and finish times each day, as long as it doesn’t affect operational delivery and colleagues keep their managers up to date and work their contractual hours.

We also encourage you to partake in your sporting activities and appreciate it is not always feasible to do this before or following work, or during your lunch break, so there is flexibility to participate in sporting activities during the course of the working day.

Finally, you are able to work from home and colleagues who would like to take advantage of this tend to do this 2 or 3 days per month.

Career Development:

Our HR team will help you undertake further professional training to benefit your development and your career at the ABI.

As well as annual performance reviews, a range of learning and development opportunities are available to employees to enhance your professional skills and understanding of insurance and public policy issues. Although we have some courses offered on a regular basis, each person’s learning and development is specifically tailored to them. We also support professional qualifications where relevant to you and your role e.g. the CII Certificate in Insurance.

You’ll be encouraged to attend a range of in-house learning events to help you better get to know who does what at the ABI and what’s impacting our industry. You may even find yourself presenting one along with your team!
