Apprenticeship week: Meet Mary

Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship?

MaryApprenticeshipsWeek.pngHelping people has always come naturally to me, so when I began exploring where I wanted my career to go, Covéa stood out - not just as a business that supports customers when they need it most, but as a company that encourages its people to grow. One of the reasons I applied was knowing Covéa exists to protect people when the worst happens. I’ve always enjoyed helping others. Here, I knew I could do that and develop through great personal development programmes.

I was also drawn to Covéa’s commitment to inclusion, from increasing female representation in senior leadership to offering internships that help break down barriers for young Black people. I’m proud to work for a company that aims to break down systemic barriers and create life-changing career opportunities.

What are the most rewarding aspects of working in the insurance and long-term savings industry?

One thing that has made a huge difference for me is the support I’ve received – for example, I’ve received a lot of help from my manager. He’s set aside a day each week for me to focus on apprenticeship work and is always there to help. I feel very lucky.

My team have also played a big part, showing me the systems they use and helping her understand how the team and wider business operate. I’ve learned a lot about time management too – for example, I keep on track by setting aside Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for assignments and online learning. It’s a structure that’s helping my stay consistent and on top of my workload.

What advice would you give to someone considering an apprenticeship in the industry?

If someone is unsure whether an apprenticeship is right for them, my advice is simple: do your research before applying. An apprenticeship requires you to set aside time to learn and really understand each topic. Ask questions and make sure it’s the right path for you.
