Greater Manchester is best known for its world-renowned football teams and thriving music scene, but it should also be known for its productive and dynamic insurance and long-term savings industry. Our sector drives the growth of major cities, from Glasgow to Bristol and Cardiff to Manchester, the northern powerhouse. Insurance is vital to supporting Manchester’s economic strength; we employ nearly 15,000 people in productive, high-skilled jobs, adding nearly £2million to the economy.  

Greater Manchester’s investment in its infrastructure, world-leading universities and dedicated industrial strategy has made it an attractive destination for insurers to invest in and grow their businesses. The northern powerhouse is home to global brands such as AIG, Chubb and RSA, to household names like Co-operative Insurance, Direct Line Group and LV=, and more specialist providers like Ecclesiastical Insurance.  
World-leading health care provider, Bupa, has a proud 70-year history in Manchester. In 2018, they opened a new £65m state-of-the-art office in Salford Quays, Bupa Place, bringing together over 2,000 staff across all of its business. The building is designed to allow employees to work flexibly and collaboratively and meet the highest environmental and sustainability standards. Bupa Place has been rated ‘Excellent’ by BREEAM, the world’s leading sustainability assessor, putting it among the top 10% of UK new non-domestic buildings. Bupa, who is leading the charge in developing innovative technologydesigned Bupa Place to promote mental wellbeing – so its employees enjoy the same benefits its customers do.  

Manchester is also home to insurance giant esure, who employ nearly 700 employees in its largest UK office. esure is one of the UK’s fastest-growing insurers and is vital to supporting Manchester’s economic strength and boosting the earning power of the Northern Powerhouse.  

As well as housing major insurers, Manchester has a productive and thriving broker network, and ABI Member, Chubb, rolled out its ‘independent broker teams’ which offer bespoke services in Leeds, Manchester and Glasgow, supporting the growth of our northern cities. 

A global centre for innovation  

Manchester has quickly become an innovation hub with global reach and is home to start-ups which are supported by the insurance and long-term savings industry. ABI Member, AXA has backed the InsurTech incubator, Kamet since 2015. AXA is dedicated to building disruptive start-ups in the health and insurance market and provided an initial investment of €100 million to support the development of Fixter, a start-up which digitalises the process of car maintenance and was first piloted in Manchester. AXA provides Fixter with a global network of garages and parts suppliers, allowing Fixter to negotiate preferential rates and pass the savings on to the customer. 

Boosting home-grown talent  

To ensure Manchester maintains a globally competitive insurance and long-term savings hub way into the future, ABI Members have been boosting the skills of home-grown talent to ensure future generations on insurance workers. 

Manchester is home to ABI Member, Co-Op Insurance one of the world’s largest consumer co-operatives, which was set up in 1867 to provide fire and fidelity insurance for co-operative societies. Today, Co-op Insurance offers general insurance produces such as car and home insurance and employs over 1,000 people in its Manchester HQ in high-skilled, productive jobs. 

Co-op Insurance is vital to boosting skills and is the largest corporate sponsor of academy schools in the country. It supports 23 academies, including 8 in the Manchester area and Co-Op Insurance Executives, serve as school governors and provide mentoring, careers advice and work placement support. Co-op Insurance has also set ambitious targets to have 200 apprentices by 2022 from Manchester academies, supporting home-grown talent.
