No one thinks an income shock will happen to them. On the list of things that occupy our already overstretched lives and minds, this comes far down the list of priorities. However, we know that failure to protect income in the event of disability or illness poses a significant financial challenge to most families in the UK.
Across the UK today, millions of working families are making financial decisions on the assumption of workplace financial support when times are tough. The truth for many, is that their expectations of support will not be matched by the reality of employer and statutory provisions.
The Government's initiative to provide workers with a written statement of rights from day one of employment is commendable. This is the beginning of a multi-faceted effort to increase understanding of individual financial vulnerability in the face of being unable to work due to illness or injury. The ABI and the wider insurance industry are helping to lead the way through the launch of its Protection Calculator. This Calculator enables individuals to understand potential scenarios concerning their financial circumstances if unable to work due to illness or injury, and to aid understanding of the implications and consequences that ill health or disability may have on their current or future lifestyle and financial situation.
This event will explore the benefits of empowering individuals with information about their financial circumstances and will seek to explore what further steps can be taken to help individuals become more financially informed.
