William McDonnell, Group Chief Risk Officer, RSA Group

WilliamMcDonnell.jpgWilliam McDonnell was appointed Group Chief Risk Officer at RSA Insurance Group plc in 2014, as a member of the Group Executive Committee with direct responsibility for the Risk and Compliance function worldwide. Since joining RSA in 2006, William has also held the roles of Group Risk Director, Group Financial Controller and Head of Corporate Finance. He is a chartered accountant with extensive risk management and finance experience with a number of blue-chip financial institutions including HSBC Investment Bank, Aviva, the UK Financial Services Authority and seven years at Deloitte. While at the FSA he was author of the “Sharma Report” on why insurers fail. He has participated in the CRO Forum since 2012 and chaired its Emerging Risks Initiative which published ‘The Heat is on – Insurability and Resilience in a Changing Climate’ in January 2019. He also chaired the working group that published “Machine Decisions: Governance of AI and Big Data Analytics” in May 2019.  William is a member of the Bank of England’s Climate Financial Risk Forum and the ClimateWise Council, and is a Governor of the Purcell School for Young Musicians.
