The implementation of Open Banking and data protection rules have a common aim of giving customers control over their own data. This is hoped to lead to more choice, better products and better prices for customers. Commentators are speculating that soon we will be using interfaces that bring all a customer’s financial products – including long-term savings - together to be managed in one place. The aim of these reforms is to make the customer experience more streamlined, intuitive, and digital, akin to those that might be provided by well-known tech giants.

So what will Open Banking and the right to data portability mean in the context of pensions? Will these reforms change customers’ service expectations and their behaviour, such as where they go to find retail investments, and how much they save? Will APIs help to provide the retirement solution to the self-employed, and how will this fit with the implementation of the Pensions Dashboard? Can industry and Government find shared solutions for digital identity? How should providers navigate the sensitive issues around customer data, given recent media coverage and known customer privacy concerns? And how will the approach to D2C platforms taken by the FCA in its investment Platforms Market Study read across to the regulation of 'marketplaces' being developed in the retail banking sector?
