Julia Longbottom

Julia Longbottom took up the post of Director for Consular Affairs in the UK’s Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) in London in August 2016.  She is responsible for leading the delivery of the UK’s consular services globally, through a staff of around 150 in London and a network of just under 600 staff in some 160 countries and territories around the world.  This includes responsibility for preparation and response to overseas crises.

Julia served as Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy in Tokyo until summer 2016, which was her second posting to Japan.  Her other Asia-focused roles have been Head of China/Far Eastern Department (2009 – 2012) and Head of Section for Nationality and Immigration in the Hong Kong Department at the time of the handover to China (1994-1997).  Her other overseas postings were to Poland as Consul General and Director of Trade & Investment in Warsaw (2002 – 2006), and to The Hague (1998 – 2002).  She was Strategy Director in UK Trade & Investment in London in 2006-2009.  She joined the Diplomatic Service in 1986.

Julia graduated in Modern Languages (French and German) from Cambridge University.  She also speaks Japanese, Polish and Dutch.  She is married with three children.  She enjoys tennis, running and skiing, and all kinds of outdoor activities.
