FCO highlights the importance of travel insurance

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has released new research highlighting the importance of travel insurance.

The findings, which can be found in a handy infographic (pdf 191kB), include:

  • 16% of consumers mistakenly believe that travel insurance is unnecessary as the UK government will pay for treatment abroad
  • Half (50%) of all British travellers don’t check that they are covered before an adventurous holiday experience
  • 48% of people don't realise that without travel insurance they'd be liable to pay for their own medical bills abroad

The ABI's Kate Carr comments:

"Making sure that you have the right travel insurance for your needs is crucial, whether travelling as part of a package or independently.

"The main purpose of travel insurance is to cover the costs of urgent medical treatment should you fall ill abroad, and any emergency medical repatriation back to the UK. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions, make sure you tell your travel insurer before you travel. The costs of medical treatment abroad and emergency medical repatriation can total thousands of pounds."
