ABI comment on the Competition Commissions investigation of the private healthcare market

The ABI has responded to the Competition Commission’s publication of provisional findings and possible remedies of its investigation into the private healthcare market.

Aidan Kerr, the ABI’s Assistant Director, Head of Property & Health said:

"The ABI welcomes the Competition Commission’s report into the supply or acquisition of privately funded healthcare services in the UK. Identifying and tackling features that suppress competition in private healthcare can only be good for patients. We also welcome the Commission’s findings on the need for more clarity and transparency of information on quality and performance of private hospitals and consultants.

"Insurers are committed to ensuring their customers get the most appropriate healthcare and service they expect, and the healthcare information available to patients should be at least comparable to the information available on the NHS.  Patients have the right to be informed about the costs and quality of their healthcare so they can make informed decisions on whether what is proposed is within their insurance cover. We look forward to continuing to work with the Competition Commission as they finalise their findings and remedies over the coming weeks.”
