Tidjane Thiam, Group Chief executive of Prudential and ABI Chairman 2012-2014, said:

"It has been a pleasure working with Otto over the past few years and I am sure he will bring to NEST the same strong leadership that he gave the ABI. I would also like to congratulate Huw on his appointment and we look forward to continuing to work closely with him and the ABI team on the key challenges facing the UK life sector."

John O'Roarke, managing director of LV= general insurance, said:

"The appointment of Huw Evans as director general of the ABI gets my vote. I think he will do an excellent job at a time when the work of the ABI has never been more relevant on important initiatives such as Flood Re and controlling the cost of whiplash. I wish him every success in his new role."

Barry O’Dwyer, Standard Life Managing Director, Advisor and Workplace said:

"I think this is a great appointment for the ABI. As Deputy Director General Huw Evans has shown that he can lead the industry through challenging times. As the deadline approaches for the implementation of the Budget reforms and with a General Election on the horizon, our industry will need a strong voice and an effective trade body. I believe that the modernisation of the ABI, begun under Otto Thoresen’s leadership, will deliver good outcomes for our industry and I look forward to working with the ABI during this busy, exciting time."

Maurice Tulloch, CEO Aviva UK & Ireland General Insurance said:

"I would like to thank Otto Thoresen for his personal commitment during his time with the ABI and I wish Huw Evans every success with his appointment as Director General. I have worked closely with Huw during the past year and I know his experience with the regulator and government will serve the ABI well. I am confident that under his leadership the ABI will continue to modernise and tackle the issues that matter most to our industry and its customers."

Toby Strauss, Group Director, Insurance at Lloyds Banking Group, said:

"Otto has helped guide the insurance industry though extremely choppy waters. The positive way the industry has responded to the challenges of increasing legislation and scrutiny are a testament to his ability as director general. Huw Evans brings a wealth of experience to the role and we very much look forward to working with him in the period ahead.”

An RSA spokesperson said:

"Otto has done a tremendous job for over the last four years and we would like to thank him for his commitment to improving our industry. Huw is the natural successor as Director General and we look forward to working with him and the ABI to continue to promote the interests of the sector and deliver an excellent service to customers."
