New Board Members

Seraina Maag, President and Chief Executive Officer of EMEA for AIG and Russell Higginbotham, CEO Swiss Re UK & Ireland, have been appointed to the ABI Board it was announced at the ABI Biennial conference today.

Andy Briggs, Chief Executive Officer of Aviva UK & Ireland Life, who already sits on the board will also become Deputy Chair.

The board appointments are part of a package of reforms designed to make the ABI a modern, lean and agenda setting organisation.

Other changes announced by the ABI today include:

  • A move to a new premises at One America Square, saving money and putting the ABI at the heart of London’s insurance district. The ABI has been located at its Gresham Street headquarters for nearly 25 years.
  • A new Associate Membership offering.
  • A new, more focused committee structure to better reflect the long term savings market, with a forward facing Long Term Savings Committee to keep members ahead of the curve and a new Legacy Committee to deal with historic issues.

Paul Evans said:

“I’m delighted to announce that we’ll shortly be joined by Seraina Maag, the EMEA CEO of AIG, and Russell Higginbotham, the UK Chief Executive of Swiss Re – each of them bringing strong voices and new perspectives to the debate. I’m also pleased to announce that Andy Briggs has taken on the role of Deputy Chairman – I look forward to working closely with Andy over the final year of my chairmanship.

“The ABI modernisation programme will be helped by an opportunity to move out of the very expensive and rather musty premises in Gresham Street. I am delighted to announce today that in early 2016 the ABI will be moving to new offices in 1 America Square. This offers a modern office facility, with much improved facilities for all our members, big and small - at a substantially lower cost to members.

“A year ago, it became evident that the Long Term Savings and Life Insurance Committee was devoting too much of its time looking back over its shoulder to address issues of the past. Splitting it in two means we now have one committee focused on the needs of members with large books of inforce business, and one focused entirely on the future – new business models, new technology, new products, and hopefully, in time, new members.”

Seraina Maag said:

“At a challenging time for the insurance industry, the ABI has a key role to play in developing our future vision and strengthening our collective voice.  As a new member of the Board, I look forward to working with Huw Evans and my Board colleagues to help advance our industry to a successful future”.

Russell Higginbotham said:

"Reinsurance plays a vital role in the UK insurance sector. I am delighted to offer Swiss Re's insights via the board and further support the ABI's great work representing its members and developing a sector that serves the fast-changing needs of clients and wider society."

Andy Briggs said:

“Our industry has a huge responsibility to ensure that we get the best outcomes for customers at a time of unprecedented regulatory change and the ABI, as the industry body, is central to this.  I am delighted to be taking on the role of Deputy Chair of the ABI and continuing to play an active role in addressing an increasingly busy industry agenda.”
