ABI advice to homeowners on disposal of flood damaged possessions

With thousands of homeowners starting the clear up after the recent flooding, the ABI is reassuring those flooded about the disposal of damaged possessions.

James Dalton, ABI’s Director of General Insurance Policy, said:James Dalton

“As the clean up begins after the devastating flooding that Storms Eva and Frank have inflicted across the UK, insurers understand that people will want to get rid of their ruined possessions as soon as possible. This is why insurers will take a pragmatic approach and advise you on how best to dispose of flood damaged items as quickly as possible.”

Anyone with flood damaged possessions should:

  • Contact your home insurer for immediate advice on what to do next. In some cases an inspection of possessions will not be necessary.
  • Dispose of any items that are a health hazard, such as rotting food.
  • Take photos of damaged items before throwing them away.
  • For items like carpets and soft furnishings, take a cutting as this can help  your insurer in providing a similar replacement or cash payment.
