ABI comments on Government Work Health and Disability Green Paper

Commenting on the release of the Government’s Work, Health and Disability Green Paper, ABI Director General, Huw Evans said:

“Disabilities can have a profound impact on people’s lives, and too many working days are lost to sickness and injury. This is why we are pleased that the Government is looking seriously at ways of encouraging and providing greater support to help get long-term sick employees back into the workplace faster.

"Insurers have a proven track record in providing a safety net to individuals, families and employers, as well as offering comprehensive rehabilitation to help people get back to work following illness or injury. They are well placed to play a key role in workplace solutions, through group income protection cover, to ensure healthier workplaces and more financially resilient employees.

“The Green Paper is absolutely right in stating that group income protection can play a much bigger role in helping both small and large businesses support employees with health conditions. Currently, only 7% of the population has cover through group income protection and we are committed to helping the Government explore how to encourage more employers to provide this vital protection to their staff.”
