“Automatic enrolment has been a big success so far, with pension providers backing it from the start. But we cannot stand still, and this review must lead to clear plans on how to engage with and encourage all workers with saving and planning for their retirement. While the review will rightly examine many of the issues we have raised, such as the qualifying earning bands and how to help the self-employed, it is crucial that contribution levels are also addressed. Increasing the contribution levels for automatic enrolment to 8%, due to happen by 2019, will still leave many savers without enough money for later life. This review should aim to take us much closer to agreement on how contribution rates should rise in the future.”
