Building new homes is key - but it is not sustainable to build in areas of high flood risk

Responding to the publication of the Government’s White Paper on housing, Mark Shepherd, Head of Property at the Association of British Insurers, said:

“Building new homes is key to the long-term sustainability of the UK housing market. But it is not sustainable to build in areas of high flood risk or in a way which will cause flooding problems for neighbouring homeowners in years to come. We are pleased to see an increased emphasis in the White Paper on the consideration which should be given to climate change and to the potential danger of increasing flood risk for wider communities, and these must be at the core of Local Authority planning decisions.

“New developments should not go ahead against Environment Agency advice and there needs to be fresh commitment to the use of sustainable drainage systems - such as permeable paving and landscaping - to help manage water run-off during severe weather.”
