Beast from the East - insurance advice from the ABI

With freezing temperatures and snow disrupting much of the UK, the Association of British Insurers is advising people:

  • Not to leave your vehicle unattended while it is defrosting. During winter weather there are always reports of thieves stealing cars left unattended in these circumstances.
  • Keep up to date with weather reports, and follow police advice on whether or not it is safe to drive.
  • If you are due to fly, check the advice from your air carrier or the airport. If your flight is cancelled, speak to your tour operator or air carrier. Where your flight is delayed, or transport disruption due to the bad weather means that you miss your flight, then you may be able to claim under your travel insurance. Check your policy for details, including limits on what you may be able to claim for.
  • In case of frozen or burst pipes, know where your stopcock is and ensure that it works, and follow our advice

Any damage caused to your property, such as collapsing roofs caused by heavy snow, should be covered, so check your policy or speak to your insurer. Comprehensive motor insurance will cover any damage caused by bad weather, such as snow and ice.

Malcolm Tarling, ABI spokesperson said:

Malcolm Tarling“It may be nearly spring, but it feels like the arctic for many. During this extreme cold snap, play it safe, follow weather warnings and advice, and do not drive unless absolutely necessary. As ever when bad weather strikes, insurers will be ready to deal with any insurance claims.”
