FlyBMI collapse – advice for customers

The prime reason for taking out travel insurance is to have cover against medical bills for emergency treatment, which can quickly run to tens of thousands of pounds. Depending on the product you buy, travel insurance can also provide cover for cancellations, delays and disruption, and belongings getting lost or damaged.

Anyone who’s due to travel with FlyBMI is advised to:

  • contact your tour operator or travel agent if you used one for advice about refunds or alternative flight options
  • check whether you can get a refund from your credit card provider if you paid by credit card
  • try your travel insurer. Some travel insurance policies include cover for Scheduled Airline Failure so once you’ve exhausted other options, you should be able to make a claim

If you make alternative plans to travel to a different destination, travel insurance can normally be transferred to cover the new arrangements. You can get more information via the Civil Aviation Authority.
