Third party insurance

Third party motor insurance is the minimum cover required by law in the UK.

Policy details may vary from insurer to insurer, but all third party policies should cover you for costs that arise as a result of:

  • injuries to or the death of other people, including passengers in your vehicle
  • damage to other people's vehicles
  • damage to other people's property
  • accidents caused by passengers in your vehicle
  • accidents or damage caused by a caravan or trailer attached to your vehicle

Third party policies cover you regardless of who is at fault (you or the other driver).

Third party fire and theft policies cover everything that third party policies cover, but with added protection against:

  • your vehicle being stolen
  • your vehicle being damaged or destroyed in a fire

Third party policies do not cover costs that arise as a result of damage to your own vehicle – for this you need comprehensive motor insurance.
