Fran Bruce, Managing Director, Protection at Aviva UK, has been appointed as the new Chair of the ABI’s Protection Board, taking over from outgoing Chair Paul Brencher, Aviva.
The ABI’s Protection Board sets the strategic direction of the ABI’s work on protection policy. The Protection Board's role is to help the sector promote the significant value it provides to individuals, families and businesses across the UK, whilst proactively identifying areas to drive better standards across industry that improve customer experience, access and understanding of insurance.
Key priorities for the Protection Board as we head towards 2022 include working with government to meet its objectives to improve employee health and reduce workplace sickness absence; improving transparency, access and consumer trust; and promoting the important role protection products play in supporting the mental, physical and financial health of the UK.

“I would like to thank Paul for steering the Committee’s agenda, and in particular, his tireless efforts to help deliver the ABI’s Mental Health & Insurance Standards and Mental Health training module in partnership with Rightsteps. These initiatives have helped the industry take a big step forward in increasing access to insurance. They are also a perfect example of how to partner with others to make improvements for customers.”
Fran Bruce, chair of the ABI protection board said:
“I am delighted to be taking over as Chair of the Protection Board at the Association of British Insurers (ABI).
“The past eighteen months in particular have demonstrated the value of protection insurance for customers and their families, employers, and advisers, and where we as an industry can support them when they need it most. The Protection Board and its members have a crucial role in coming together to achieve this.
“I am looking forward to strengthening my relationship with the ABI after representing Aviva on the Long-Standing Customers' Committee. I am keen to bring my knowledge and experience from this area to the Protection Board, and also working with industry colleagues across the protection market to continue the progress that has been made so far.”
Fran takes over as Managing Director of the Aviva Protection business during October 2021. Fran joined Aviva in the UK Life Finance function and has held many roles across Investments, With-profits and technical accounting, and finally leading the FP&A function through the Friends Life integration. In 2017, Fran took up a position in Aviva’s UK Savings & Retirement business, responsible for developing the business strategy and detailed execution plan. Fran is currently the Managing Director of Existing Customer Management in Aviva UK Life. She has responsibility for the substantial existing customer business, relationship management of Life Outsource suppliers and Customer Engagement.
