Parental Leave

Parental leave is available to ABI colleagues with one year's continuous service who have, or expect to have, parental responsibility for a child.

You can take up to a total of 18 weeks unpaid Parental Leave for each child any time up until the date of the child's 18th birthday. You can take a maximum of 4 weeks Parental Leave per year in respect of any individual child.

Carer's Leave

The aim of carer's leave is to help ABI employees who are also unpaid carers balance those competing priorities more easily.

Carer's leave gives you the right to take time off work where you are providing unpaid care to family members, friends, neighbours or others because of long term (i.e. longer than 6 months) physical or mental health, disability and/or problems related to age.

Menstruation and Menopause

We are committed to ensuring colleagues experiencing symptoms of the menopause and menstruation are fully supported at work. Our policy aims to enhance awareness of both menstruation and the menopause and the affects it has on those experiencing it.

We recognise experiences and perceptions may differ and it is our intention to provide inclusive support so colleagues can succeed at work. This support includes working with individuals to put reasonable adjustments in place, as well as the ability to take paid sickness leave if required. The ABI also provides free sanitary products at its office locations.

Miscarriage

Our miscarriage policy covers all types of baby loss before 24 weeks. Having the right support and flexibility for parents when going through a miscarriage is crucial and our policy makes provision for colleagues to take paid time off as needed to help them recover both emotionally and physically.

There is also a Parental Bereavement Leave policy should colleagues experience baby loss post 24 weeks.

Fertility

We are committed to providing an inclusive and supportive working environment for all our colleagues. Our fertility policy outlines the support available to employees who are undergoing, or who are companions to individuals undergoing assisted conception treatment.

Our policy makes provision for colleagues to take paid time off to attend medical appointments related to assisted contraception treatment, as well as time off to recover from any such treatments. We also have a provision of up to 5 days’ discretionary paid time off for individuals to accompany an induvial undergoing assisted contraception treatment.

Flexible Working:

All eligible ABI colleagues may apply to work more flexibly on a permanent and contractually binding basis, and our job adverts make it clear that we are open to applications from those who wish to work on a flexible and/or job share basis.

Colleagues are required to attend the office for a minimum 40% of their working time on average over the course of a month. For full time colleagues, this works out as 2 days a week on average, but your exact working pattern will depend on activities for each week and the requirements of your role.

Normal working hours at the ABI fall anywhere between 8am and 5:30pm and there is a degree of flexibility regarding exact start and finish times each day.

Career Development:

Our HR team will help you undertake further professional training to benefit your development and your career at the ABI.

As well as annual performance reviews, a range of learning and development opportunities are available to employees to enhance your professional skills and understanding of insurance and public policy issues. Although we have some courses offered on a regular basis, each person’s learning and development is specifically tailored to them. We also support professional qualifications where relevant to you and your role e.g. the CII Certificate in Insurance.

You’ll be encouraged to attend a range of in-house learning events to help you better get to know who does what at the ABI and what’s impacting our industry. You may even find yourself presenting one along with your team!
